Course Description
This workshop will introduce the student to the materials, practice, and history of papermaking. Students will produce a variety of archival quality papers using raw and recycled materials. The students will lower their cost for art materials by constructing paper to be used in future projects.
Course Objectives

Students will identify, setup, and operate equipment used in papermaking

Each student will apply their new knowledge to produce a variety of flat handmade eco-friendly papers using raw and recycled materials

Students will demonstrate a thorough understanding of papermaking techniques by modifying the ingredients to reproduce papers containing color, inclusions, and plant fibers

The students will finalize his or her papers by manipulating the surface structure of each sheet of paper

Students will evaluate and compile a select number of papers to create an Edition set

Each student will defend his or her Edition set based on the given criteria

All students will rate and summarize the papermaking experience with a written evaluation survey
Expectations:
Students will come to class on time and exhibit an eagerness to learn. Apply information covered and maintain a positive attitude. Students are expected to adhere to the highest standards of academic honesty as set forth by JU.

Paper Editions:
You will be required to make the following types of European style paper
-make 2 sheets plain white paper
-make 4 sheets plain edged paper
-make 4 sheets deckle edged paper
-make 4 sheets with inclusions
-make 4 sheets patterned (appliqué/mold)
-make 4 sheets colored paper
Required Materials:
1 Mould and Deckle with screen (11”x14”)
1 Plastic rectangular Container for forming paper (16” x 20” x 5”)
1 bucket mixing paper pulp (3-5 gallon size)
1 yard of Felt for couching blankets
2 yards of Screen for couching
1 large Cellulose sponge
2 XX Large Shammy (20” x 30”)
1 Measuring spoon (teaspoon size)
1 Measuring cup (2 cup size)
1 pint of Internal Sizing
1 Styptic pen (external Sizing)
1 vinyl Apron/smock (optional)
Water based paint / Colored paper for coloring pulp
Paper (copy, notebook, magazines, etc)
Miscellaneous material (flowers, leaves, mementos, etc)
Students should preorder the papermaking kit via email prior to the beginning of the workshop to allow time for the mould and Deckle to be made. All preordered papermaking kits will be available on the first day of the workshop and can be paid for at that time.

1/4 cup dry Corn Starch (Internal Sizing)
1 Styptic pen (External Sizing)

The resources provide will assist the student that desires to continue the art of papermaking. The Hellen Hiebert’s book shows the reader the general papermaking techniques. Traditional papermaking supplies can be purchase in different quantities from Twin Rocker.
